Advice For Coeliacs
Tips for product to check/avoid
- Always check Squash!! In particular, Robinsons, as they offer squash which contains barley. I ended up drinking squash with barley in it for months! I didn't ever think squash would contain gluten, even though it said barley on the label it took me a while to put two and two together!
- Chocolate!! Always check the labels, a lot of the time chocolates are produced in facilities where other products containing gluten are produced. Thus, there is a risk of cross contamination, for example Guylian. Also Lindt/Lindors are not gluten free (It's so sad, I know) and also Smarties!)
- Crisps, again a lot of crisps have 'May contain gluten' on the packaging so avoid these! E.g. Squares are not gluten free
- Chips, when eating out or even at someone's house, make sure the chips are gluten free. A lot of frozen chips are covered in flour. Also restaurants tend to fry chips in the same oil as items containing gluten, so be careful of cross contamination!
- Gravy & stuffing & Potatoes, when eating a roast be super careful! Gravy made with cornflour is fine but ask to see if it is! Also find out if there has been any flour put onto the potatoes.
- Soy Sauce, it’s not GF! But there is a GF option in the supermarket Free From section!
- Brown sauce!
- Stock cubes
- Porridge/Oats, these are one you MUST check, PURE oats are GF so make sure you check the labels!
Tips for how to eat GF safely
- Toaster bags! University students this is a must, it will save you buying your own toaster! Also handy for going away on holidays or to family/friend houses, avoids cross contamination. P.S you can buy them on Amazon!
- Try plan/prepare meals when you're going to be out, it'll save you snacking on unhealthy food! It may be time consuming, but you can see it as enjoyable, as you'll be eating proper food!
- Always carry a snacker or even bread with you! Something I now do is keep some bread rolls in my car and GF snacks so I can easily eat something when I am out.
- If you can, check for the GF restaurants/cafes in the area you're visiting to help make your time easier!
