Food Shopping in Spain: Mercadona & Carrefour

If you're worried that you will struggle to find gluten free food in supermarkets in Spain, rest assured you will not find it hard! If anything, you'll be trying to find space in your suitcase to bring back gluten free food! I certainly was!!

Travelling to Spain makes you realise that the U.K. is far behind in comparison. The selection of gluten free products is incredible and everything is so clearly labelled! My advice to you if you're going to Spain is to scout out the local Mercadona or Carrefour!

Mercadona

I visited three during my time in Spain, the best purchase from there was definitely their bread. I tried their white loaf of bread and burger buns and they were the best I have ever had! I haven't ever enjoyed a loaf of bread that much since before going gluten free! The bread is just like 'regular' bread, it's soft and fluffy. I would never consider eating just butter on bread with any gluten free bread I have tried, but I did with this bread! AND not only is it gluten free it is lactose free too!!

Check the bread out on my post on instagram!

They also have gluten free crackers and cake. However, Carrefour has a wider selection of gluten free products.

Carrefour

This is a much bigger supermarket, full of everything you could think of from tyres to food it has it all! Therefore, the gluten free section is much bigger and they stock the brands.

They label the gluten free sections so clearly making shopping super easy! They have a dedicated small gluten free bakery area within the regular bakery section. Within their refrigerated cake section they also have a clearly labelled gluten free area too. Carrefour stocks a LOT of Schär products, some that you can't even get in the U.K.

Both supermarkets have clear labels on all food items if they are gluten free, making the shopping experience simpler!

Whether you're self catered or not, I recommend a trip to the shops just to try products you can't get back home!
